Change of Name Suits

A suit to change the name of a child can be one of the easiest or one of the hardest suits, depending on whether each of the child’s parents, managing conservators (if applicable), and guardians (if applicable) agree to the name change. If agreed, the suit can be quick and very affordable. If disputed, the suit can resemble a child custody suit.

A suit to change the name of an adult is a simple matter, provided the adult does not have a criminal record or is a registered sex offender. A court may change the name of a woman in a divorce decree to any name previous used by her, such as her maiden name or a previous married name, without the woman having to file a separate suit to change her name. If the woman in a divorce suit wants to change her name to a name she has not used before, she must file a separate suit to change her name.
