On February 25, 2009, Underwood attorney, Nick Nevarez, Jr., gave an E-Verify Workshop presentation at the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission (“PRPC”). Approximately 75 individuals attended the two sessions offered by the PRPC. The workshop highlighted the May 21, 2009, mandatory start date for federal contractors to enroll in E-Verify. Subcontractors offering services and construction over $3,000, must also enroll in E-Verify.
The language requiring federal contractors enroll in E-Verify will be found in the federal contract itself. For the duration of the federal contract, all new hires must be verified via E-Verify, irregardless of their participation on the federal contract. Additionally, individuals employed before the May 21, 2009 award date, who work on the federal contract, must also be verified via E-Verify.
As an employer, if you are not familiar with E-Verify, or have general questions regarding its use and applicability, you are not alone. Please do not hesitate to contact Underwood with any questions. Handouts from the PRPC workshop are available.
Established in 1969, the PRPC assists local governments in planning, developing, and implementing programs designed to improve the general health, safety, and welfare of the citizens in the Texas Panhandle.
